In the middle of September at Otari village’s Chikuni Suwa Shrine an annual festival takes place. This festivals is one of many in Japan dedicated to fertility. As part of the festival local men called “sasara-otoko” cover their faces with either black or red masks while caring carrying wooden phalluses.
